60-Minute Introduction To Krav Maga Class
Krav Maga differs from almost all martial arts and self-defense systems in that it is not designed by techniques. Traditional martial arts, such as Karate and Tae-Kwon-Do, have their techniques contained in Katas, Forms and Patterns, meaning that they are specific and unchangeable. Krav Maga differs in that the approach is a set of concepts and heuristics that allow for evolution and adaptation of change i.e., they guide the development of solutions to violence. This is important because violence, and the tools of violence are subject to change e.g., when Krav Maga was initially developed in the 1940’s (it wasn’t the first Israeli system of fighting and built upon the foundations of an approach referred to as KAPAP, an acronym standing for Krav Panim a Panim, meaning “fighting face to face” in Hebrew), rifles were largely single shot and didn’t fire automatically or semi-automatically. This meant the barrel never/rarely got so hot that it couldn’t be grabbed, and this is what the first Krav Maga long-barrel disarms consisted of. As Semi-automatic and automatic weapons became more prevalent, this method of controlling and disarming weapons was no longer possible and so the techniques to do so had to change. Because Krav Maga is about principles, these were used to come up with new disarming solutions, and as is the nature of Krav Maga, they were simplified and made more universal; the same technique is used to control and disarm from all directions e.g., if the weapon is pointed to the front, the back or to the sides etc.
“Krav Maga is about what you will do in a fight, not what you may think you will do, or even plan to do.”
Gershon Ben Keren
Introduction To Krav Maga Seminar Content
In this 60-minute introduction to Krav Maga seminar, you will be introduced to some of these concepts and principles and how they sometimes have to be adapted from their original military contexts to civilian ones etc. You will learn how to block punches as well as knife attacks using the same techniques; Krav Maga’s blocking system is based on natural defenses to movement, rather than on identifying the specific nature of the attack etc., You will learn a simple heuristic, which will allow you to quickly classify the nature of a threat and/or attack, and guide you in making an appropriate response. You will also learn reusable movements that can be used to deal with certain unarmed and armed attacks/threats; some where a weapon is involved and some where the attack is an unarmed one.
This Introductory Krav Maga seminar is also our entry point for joining the school as a full-time member. As well as learning the ideas, principles and concepts that define the system, you will also learn how to correctly hold and work pads with a partner (both focus mitts and kick shields), along with how to correctly make a fist and deliver power punches and strikes etc. This is to prepare you for our regular classes, so that when you join you can hit the ground running and be able to fully benefit from the training that you will receive.
